New street furniture for Goole town centre arrives

New socially distanced street furniture has arrived in Goole town centre as part of a phase one public spaces enhancement programme developed by the Goole Town Deal Board.

New seating and planters in Goole town centre

A variety of seating, table options and planters organised to coincide with the COVID-safe reopening of high streets have been secured on several sites on the pedestrian plaza and Paradise Place in the town centre.

The furniture will complement Goole’s ‘built heritage’, with multifunctional spaces promoting wellbeing, and is expected to give confidence to residents and visitors that the town centre is safe and open for business.

Joseph Richardson, chair of the Goole Town Deal Board, said: “Public investment is needed to create a step-change in the quality and accessibility of Goole town centre’s public realm.

“This is a very exciting time for Goole and the Board would like residents, businesses and investors to benefit from the phase one works.”

The furniture will be spaced out equally to ensure social distancing, and is a mix of combined picnic units and tables with benches for accessibility purposes.

The areas were chosen to support businesses and create more interest in public space. Environmentally friendly options were chosen too, with the pieces made from 100% recycled plastic and can also be 100% recycled once their lifetime of 25 years has ended.

From 2022 to 2026, there is potential for a large public realm programme in the Goole Town Investment Plan. The street furniture fixings, in this instance, have been chosen so they can be repositioned or relocated either in the town centre or elsewhere in Goole at a later date.

The planters in place will enhance Goole’s green environment through evergreen architectural grasses, to maintain simplicity and minimal maintenance.

Margaret Hicks-Clarke, Chair of Goole Civic Society, said: “Through the Town Investment Plan, the Board is seeking investment for projects which offer an exciting future for Goole.

"These come from the hundreds of thoughts, ideas and comments from residents, businesses and organisations in the town that are as passionate about Goole as we are.

“There is a real mix of exciting projects at concept stage, so there will be lots of opportunities for communities to help shape, influence and have their say on the detail over the coming year and beyond – so watch this space!”
