National campaign sees East Riding Libraries and Customer Service Centres ‘Try 1 Thing’ Online

Get Online Week is coming to East Riding Libraries from Monday, 15 to Sunday, 21 October, to give residents the chance to make the most of the internet and learn that it can be easy and fun, no matter how confident they are online.

Get Online Week 2018

Get Online Week 2018 will see hundreds of community events take place across the country. The campaign’s message is “See how it feels when you Try 1 Thing” - use the internet to do just one thing you would normally do in person, in a shop or bank, in a classroom, in a doctor’s or a chemist’s, or even over the phone.

Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “More people than you probably think still don’t use the internet at all and we’re here to help. But even if you send the odd email, use Facebook or read the news on your phone, you could still be missing out on so much.

“Getting the most out of the internet doesn’t have to be scary. Doing just one new thing online is all you need to do to get started – improve your digital skills, mental and physical health, take part in some learning, try some council online features, or just try something fun, new and interesting. Just visit our Get Online Week section on the council website or come along to one of our events and we can help you do just that!”

Get Online Week events, in partnership with KCOM and Barclays, will be held at:

  • Haltemprice Library and Customer Service Centre on Tuesday, 16 October, from 11am-1pm and
  • Bridlington Central Library on Wednesday, 17 October, from 10.30am-12.30pm.

There will be lots of friendly support for anyone who wants to start doing a bit more online - and it’s absolutely free.

In addition, staff at the council’s customer service centres will also use the opportunity of Get Online Week to talk to customers about:

  • going online for blue badges (Monday)
  • non urgent housing repairs (Tuesday)
  • reporting changes to housing benefit and council tax support (Wednesday)
  • reporting issues online including potholes and streetlights (Thursday) and
  • household waste (Friday).
