What is a Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) group?

Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) is a scheme where neighbours, the police and local partners come together to build safe and friendly communities.

Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators play a key role in sharing information between residents and the police.

Why set up a Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) group?

National statistics show that if you live in a Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) area, your chance of being burgled reduces making it one of the most successful crime prevention initiatives in the country.

Aims of Neighbourhood Watch

The aim of a NHW:

• Reduce crime and the opportunities for crime
• Help and reassure those who live in fear of crime
• Encourage communities to work closely together with local Police and Authorities
• Encourage community spirit.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is committed to supporting NHW and help is available whether you are looking to start a new group or re-launch an existing group. The Police and other agencies work closely with the council to support NHW groups.

Where are the Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) groups in the East Riding?

There are now in the region of 400 NHW groups across the East Riding.

How do I set up and register a new Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) group with East Riding of Yorkshire Council?

If you have checked to see where the Neighbourhood Watch Groups are in your area and can’t see your area listed then you can set a group by reading and agreeing to abide by the Neighbourhood Watch Network Code of Ethics below and returning the attached registration and permission form.
