Join an East Riding library

Joining an East Riding of Yorkshire library online or in person. Proof of ID required, library card expiry information and PIN details.

Can I join the library online?

Yes. You can join the library online if you are aged 16 or over with no restrictions. If you are aged 15 or under you will need the adult that is responsible for you, for example your parent, step-parent, carer, etc to complete the guarantors section.

How to join

After you have joined the library online you will be given a temporary library card number. This is the letters 'UNREG' followed by a series of numbers. You must exchange your temporary library card number for a library card within 30 days*. You can do this at any East Riding Library. *Due to the Covid-19 pandemic your temporary library card number will be valid for 6-months. Please make a note of this number and your PIN. When it is safe to do so, you will need these details to collect your library card from your chosen East Riding Library branch.  

You will need proof of ID to exchange your temporary library card number. Your proof of ID needs to show your name, address and signature. For example, your driving licence has all three or a current utility bill with your name and address and a bank card with your signature would be accepted.

Can I join the library in person?

Yes. You can join the library in person at any age.

The best way to join the library in person is by visiting your local branch or mobile library. The library staff can then give you all the specific details about that library, the regular events and activities, facilities and services. 
You can also join the library in person at any East Riding Library but please remember to tell the library staff which library you wish to be registered at. Find a library

When you join the library in person you will need proof of ID if you are aged 18 or over. Your proof of ID needs to show your name, address and signature. For example, your driving licence has all three or a current utility bill with your name and address and a bank card with your signature would be accepted. 

When you join the library in person you will be given your library card, key fob and PIN immediately. 

Children aged 15 and below will need to have an adult as a guarantor. If an adult isn't present at the time of joining you can take a form home for the adult to sign and authorise you to be a library member. 

What is OPEN+ and what does it allow me to do?

OPEN+ is the facility for new and existing library members that allows you to enter Haltemprice Library and Customer Service Centre during specified OPEN+ un-staffed hours.

OPEN+ is available to library members aged 16 and over. 

Children under 16 years can enter Haltemprice Library and Customer Service Centre during OPEN+ un-staffed hours if they are accompanied by an OPEN+ registered responsible adult. 

You can then:

  • borrow and return items using the library self-service machines, check your account and collect items you have reserved
  • use the free library WiFi service 
  • use the assisted digital computer for information and advice on all council and partner services.  

You will need to swipe your library card and enter your PIN at the door. The system photographs you on entry and the library is surveyed by CCTV at all times for your safety.

How do I register for OPEN+ membership?

How do I register for OPEN+ membership?

New or existing library members who are aged 16 years or above can register for OPEN+ membership. 

You can register for OPEN+ membership at any East Riding library, but currently, only Haltemprice Library and Customer Service Centre can be visited out of normal staffed opening hours.

Access will be activated within two working (staffed) days following registration.

Print and complete the registration form and take it to your local branch library where staff will register you for OPEN+.

As an OPEN+ member If you change your library membership number (e.g. replace your ticket) or change your PIN, you must notify staff at your OPEN+ library who will register the new number on the OPEN+ system. This can be done in person or from your library membership linked email but not by telephone.  There will then be a delay of two working (staffed) days before you can visit during OPEN+ hours.

What do I do if my library card has expired?

Just take your library card along next time you visit the library and it can be renewed. 

If you have moved home you will need to provide new proof of ID. Your proof of ID needs to show your name, address and signature. For example, your driving licence has all three, or a current utility bill with your name and address and a bank card with your signature would be accepted. 

The library staff will be happy to renew your library card for you.

How do I get my PIN?

When you join the library a PIN is automatically generated for you. If you want to reset your PIN to something more memorable or you have forgotten your PIN, you can reset it.

For security reasons, we are unable to do anything to do with your PIN over the telephone.
