What is the UK Youth Parliament?

The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) enables young people to use their energy and passion to change the world for the better. It is run by young people for young people, UKYP provides opportunities for young people aged 11-18 years old to use their voice in creative ways to bring about social change. 

Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) in East Riding of Yorkshire are elected bi-annually and serve a two year term of office. They are elected via a county wide vote to represent the voice of young people in East Riding of Yorkshire on a local, regional and national level.   

In East Riding of Yorkshire, we will have two MYPs and two Deputy MYPs (DMYPs).  

What does a member of the UK Youth Parliament do?

Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) have an important role to play representing young people in the East Riding:

• MYPs from across the UK, work to give young people a voice
• East Riding MYPs will represent the young people of the East Riding at regional, national and sometimes international events 
• They get to sit in the Houses of Parliament in Westminster and vote on issues that are important to young people and help make a positive change for everyone. 

What are the benefits of being a being part of UKYP?

Being part of the UKYP is a fun experience presenting young people with a range of new enjoyable challenges:

• UKYP empowers young people to take positive action within their local communities based upon issues of shared concern. 
• UKYP gives the young people of the UK an opportunity to be involved in a democratic process at a national level. 
• Playing an active role in local issues. 

Who is eligible to vote?

Voting is open to any young person between the age of 11 and 18, who lives, works or studies in the East Riding.

How do I vote?

Secondary schools across the East Riding will be holding elections on-site week commencing 7 February 2022 and all those eligible to vote will be able to complete a ballot paper.

Those young people who are not educated in a school setting or are in Post-16 provision will be sent voting details directly through the post.

All votes must be cast by 28 February, 2022.

What is the 'Make Your Mark' campaign?

As well as electing representatives for the UK Youth Parliament, those eligible to vote will also be asked to take part in the Make Your Mark campaign and vote on a number of issues they feel are important to them across the UK and locally.

The issues, which have been agreed by the British Youth Council, will be printed on the ballot papers and will be included on the online voting link sent directly to Post-16 students who are not in a school setting.
