The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change fifth assessment Synthesis Report: Climate Change 2014 stated the following:
"Warming of the climate system is unequivocal" and "human influence on the climate system is clear, and recent anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases are the highest in history."
The Climate Change Act commits the UK government by law to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to Net Zero by 2050 with a set of legally binding 'carbon budgets' to act as stepping stones towards this 2050 target.
We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions and, in recognition of this, in 2021we declared a climate emergency. The Carbon & Energy Management Strategy (CEMS) produced by the Asset Strategy department analyses the current context for this agenda, outlines our carbon reduction targets and makes recommendations to ensure we meet them. It has been developed to understand our carbon emissions, energy consumption and energy costs as part of a commitment to improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon and contributing to sustainable development.
We are committed to aligning its interventions with those at national level. This means aiming to reduce carbon emissions in line with the national target of Net Zero by 2050:
